Travel Gear
Travel gear content is the worst-polluted niche in the entire affiliate-blog ecosystem. Half the 'best backpack' lists are written by people who've never carried any of them. Most water-filter roundups are reprints of REI product copy with affiliate links bolted on.
What we do: we use the gear. Every product reviewed in this category has been on at least one trip with us. Most have been on 5-10. We try to fail gear so you don't have to.
The honest split: a Sawyer Squeeze is a better filter for most backpackers than a Katadyn BeFree, but the BeFree is faster on day hikes. A Garmin inReach Mini 2 is more reliable than a Zoleo, but the Zoleo's plan structure is better for casual users. The 'best' product depends on the use case, and we'll tell you which use case each one wins.
Brands we trust on quality (not always on price): REI, Backcountry, Garage Grown Gear, Patagonia, Osprey, MSR, Sawyer, Garmin, EcoFlow. Brands we've returned: a few that we won't name here but that we've quietly stopped recommending.
Read the comparisons. If the pick still doesn't fit your trip, the alternatives section in each post should help you triangulate.
